SKiM - About IDIS Viitorul

11 Oct 2021
IDIS is a multi-issue think tank, working through a web of professional clusters. Our approach to the idea of think tanks role in Moldova is to achieve professional credibility in the areas of national security, welfare, foreign policy, sustainable development, and competitiveness, fairness, working both with decision-makers, academia, and young leaders, creating real alternatives in all aspects of policy-making. IDIS cares to boost advocacy platforms; it networks with various professional groups, unions, business associations, innovators, educators, and other entities, in a number of areas where national interests and cohesion can be achieved in togetherness.

SKiM - Learning Route Methodology and Women Empowerment in Moldova

10 Oct 2021
Women’s representation in Moldovan politics and decision-making processes is below international benchmarks. According the national survey, 60.3% of population believes that men are better political leaders than women, or women do not have the same rights as men. In the case of the leaders of economic and social units the differences in gender aspect are more pronounced. Of the total number of local entrepreneurs, the main share is formed of men (72.5%); the share of women constitutes only 27.5%. Thus, the number of male entrepreneurs is 2.6 times higher than that of the number of female entrepreneurs.

The INCREASE project: Intelligent Collections of food-legumegenetic resources for European agrofood systems

24 Aug 2021
Food legumes are crucial for all agriculture-related societal challenges, including climate change mitigation, agrobiodiversity conservation, sustainable agriculture, food security and human health. The transition toplant-based diets, largely based on food legumes, could present major opportunities for adaptation and mit-igation, generating significant co-benefits for human health. The characterization, maintenance andexploitation of food-legume genetic resources, to date largely unexploited, form the core development ofboth sustainable agriculture and a healthy food system. INCREASE will implement, on chickpea (Cicer ariet-inum), common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), lentil (Lens culinaris) and lupin (Lupinus albusandL. mutabilis),a new approach to conserve, manage and characterize genetic resources.Intelligent Collections, consistingof nested core collections composed of single-seed descent-purified accessions (i.e., inbred lines), will bedeveloped, exploiting germplasm available both from genebanks and on-farm and subjected to differentlevels of genotypic and phenotypic characterization. Phenotyping and gene discovery activities will meet, via a participatory approach, the needs of various actors, including breeders, scientists, farmers and agri-food and non-food industries, exploiting also the power of massive metabolomics and transcriptomics andof artificial intelligence and smart tools. Moreover, INCREASE will test, with a citizen science experiment,an innovative system of conservation and use of genetic resources based on a decentralized approach fordata management and dynamic conservation. By promoting the use of food legumes, improving their qual-ity, adaptation and yield and boosting the competitiveness of the agriculture and food sector, the INCREASEstrategy will have a major impact on economy and society and represents a case study of integrative andparticipatory approaches towards conservation and exploitation of crop genetic resources.

Institutional and farm-level challenges limiting the diffusion of new varieties from public and CGIAR centers: The case of wheat in Morocco

06 Jul 2021
Low adoption of agricultural technologies slows efforts to increase agricultural productivity and enhance rural livelihoods in developing countries. A large body of literature has sought explanations for the problem, but the focus has been mainly on micro level farm and community factors affecting adoption. Institutional factors such as policies and market conditions, which are also important, have been largely overlooked and, few, if any, studies combine the two levels of analysis. We use Morocco as a case study to analyze institutional and farm-level factors affecting diffusion and adoption of improved wheat varieties. Results show both sides to be important. Institutional factors such as overly stringent variety testing procedures, imbalance of power among actors in the seed sector and ill-conceived variety licensing contracts limit access to seeds of more recently released varieties. Adoption of older new varieties is found to be affected by farm and farmer characteristics, but imperfect access to new seeds, sometimes associated with the failings identified above, is also a constraint. Findings signal the need for increased private engagement in seed multiplication; revised variety testing procedures; alternative royalty mechanisms; and enhanced linkages between public research and private seed companies.

Field-level impacts of improved lentil varieties in Bangladesh

12 Feb 2021
In the 1980s, the expansion of irrigated Boro rice and growing susceptibility of traditional lentil varieties to diseases led to decline in dry-season lentil production in Bangladesh. The advent of improved lentil varieties in the mid-1990s solved the disease problem, but lentils remained at an economic disadvantage to the highly productive Boro rice, particularly on irrigated lands. Cultivation of lentils continued on non-irrigated lands and during the short window between rice crops on irrigated lands. Levels and determinants of adoption of these improved lentil varieties have been documented in the literature, but little is known about their field and household-level impacts. Applying an instrumental variables regression to data collected from a sample of 1,694 lentil fields and DNA fingerprinting for varietal identification, this study provides estimates of the field-level impacts of adoption of improved lentil varieties (ILVs) in Bangladesh [truncated abstract].

Objective: Demonstrate Value of KM to Decisionmakers Value for KM comes from the value of a decision made with KM compared to the value of the decision made without KM This value is determined by the “state of the world” (SOW) and uncertainty about it=>access to knowledge reduces this uncertainty Why is “value” important? Prioritize KM & invest in different KM measures Enhance KM according to its functions Provide “good” information Lowers cost of obtaining information
