Protecting Palms, Livelihoods, and the Environment: Towards the Containment and Control of the Red Palm Weevil- Consortium for Red Palm Weevil Control

Start date
01 Apr 2025
End date
31 Mar 2028
A Global Program to Protect Palms, Livelihoods, and Ecosystems: The proposed three-year program is an ambitious, international, and multi-institutional program (Consortium for Red Palm Weevil Control (C4RPWC) Program) designed to combat the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), a devastating pest that threatens palm cultivation globally. Led by ICARDA, the program aims to develop, test, adapt, and pilot innovative, sustainable science-based and environmentally friendly solutions to manage and contain RPW infestations. With the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a focal point, the program will develop and establish scalable strategies that can extend to other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) affected by this invasive pest. This initiative represents a turning point in global pest management efforts, ensuring that the cutting-edge science translates into tangible impact on farmer’s livelihoods and environmental conservation.

Reversing Egypt’s Diminishing Food Security

Start date
01 Mar 2025
End date
31 Mar 2026
The proposed project will scale out a package of combined interventions including on-farm green energy generation, water rationalization, transforming unutilized land for food production, and providing agronomic, irrigation and market advisory services for the beneficiary farmers. To increase the impact of women farmers in agriculture requires their empowerment. Project activities will focus on knowledge sharing and capacity building of women farmers, and schemes to strengthen their role in decision-making. The project will be implemented over one year in the Kafr El Sheikh, Menya and Qena governorates, directly targeting 3,053 smallholder farmers who will be equipped with tools, and improving capacities of 100 agricultural extension and irrigation advisory services officers including female farmers and officers.

Climate-Resilient Aquaculture Systems for Africa (CASA)

Start date
04 Apr 2024
End date
31 May 2029
Climate-Resilient Aquaculture Systems for Africa (CASA) is a 5-years, program funded by Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). CASA is implemented by WorldFish and partners in Kenya reaching more than 5 million consumers and focused on transforming aquaculture systems by making them more productive, profitable, climate-smart, environmentally sustainable, nutrition-sensitive, and equitable for women, young people, and poor households, thereby catalysing these systems to become significant contributors to the attainment of key national, regional, and global goals, as articulated in the SDGs, Paris Agreement, and Malabo Declaration.

Building resilient seed systems for rice, cassava, cocoa, coffee, and fish value chains to strengthen food and economic diversification in Liberia (Seeds4Liberia)

Start date
01 Apr 2024
End date
30 Apr 2027
This project aim to enhance food and nutrition security in Liberia through a demand-driven, well-structured, and regulated seed systems for rice. cassava. cowpea, cocoa referred to as "target crops" and fish. The intervention has three clusters of activities with the first cluster focusing on market intelligence to better tailor the intervention and capacity development of the National Agricultural Research and Extension System (NARES) to better perform their roles in the seed system especially those related to the production and supply of breeder seeds. The second cluster of activities is focus on the development of a market-driven seed system championed by the private sector and closely regulated by the public sector. The engagement of the private sector will be based on: (i) its capacity to demand breeder seeds and supply certified seeds on contractual basis and (ii) its capacity to demand certified seeds and supply to farmers on contractual basis. Thus, public-private-partnership and private-private-partnership contracts are envisaged under this intervention with the project team facilitating and providing capacity building and financial support especially during the first cycle of seed production. The third cluster of activities focuses on creating and enabling environment for a sustainable seed system. The activities here include operationalizing the SDCA and supporting it with an ICT-based seed production management and monitoring tool, improving farmers' access to seed and fertilizer credits and capacity building of SDCA staffs, farmers, and processor. WorldFish contribute to the fish related technical support among the big program with other partners working on other target corps.

ASIA-AFRICA BLUETECH SUPERHIGHWAY PROJECT under the Climate and Ocean Adaptation and Sustainable Transition programme (COAST)

Start date
14 Jul 2023
End date
31 Mar 2030
Asia–Africa BlueTech Superhighway (AABS) is a seven-year project, from 2023 to 2030, implemented by WorldFish with a host of partners to sustainably transform aquatic food systems in Asia and Africa. Funded by UK International Development under the Blue Planet Fund, AABS aims to leverage South–South collaboration to deliver a triple win for nature, people and climate. Aquatic food systems are essential to providing a growing global population with sustainable and climate-resilient sources of food, nutrition and livelihoods. Aquatic foods supply nutrition to over 3.2 billion people and support the livelihoods of over 600 million people, the majority of whom work in small-scale systems. However, the coastal communities and habitats at the heart of these food systems are under serious threat. Climate change is undermining the productivity and sustainability of aquatic food systems in various ways, including ocean warming and acidification, rising sea levels and saline incursion. The ocean is also under assault from over exploitation and pollution, causing a loss in marine biodiversity. Amid these challenges, countries are keen to unlock their blue economy as a rapid growth path. Enabling the development of sustainable and resilient aquatic food systems is, therefore, critical to ensure a food- and nutrition-secure future for coastal communities and to equitably improve livelihoods, while restoring our marine resources.
