Sustho Sagor (Healthy Ocean) - Sharing responsibilities and benefits from well managed MPAs for a healthy ocean and thriving communities in Bangladesh

Start date
01 Feb 2026
End date
31 Jan 2030
The Sustho Sagor project (Blue Action) is a four-year coastal resilience and marine conservation initiative in Bangladesh (2026–2030), implemented by WorldFish under a grant from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) with support from the Blue Action Fund. The project aims to strengthen sustainable management of key Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), conserve marine biodiversity, and improve the wellbeing of vulnerable coastal fishing communities. WorldFish leads the community livelihoods and resilience agenda of the project, drawing on its long-standing experience in fisheries co-management and inclusive coastal development. Core interventions include establishment of Women’s Income and Nutrition Groups (WING), Fisheries Conservation Groups (FCGs), and Community Volunteer (CV) networks to enhance livelihoods, food security, community engagement, and access to essential services. The project promotes diversified and climate-resilient enterprises such as aquaculture, seaweed farming, crab culture, eco-tourism, and value-added fish products. Through community empowerment, evidence-based planning, and collaboration with government agencies, WorldFish will contribute to more resilient coastal livelihoods, stronger local stewardship of marine resources, and inclusive blue economy outcomes in Bangladesh.

Consortium of Red Palm Weevil Control (C4RPWC) Program

Start date
01 Aug 2025
End date
31 Jul 2028
A Global Program to Protect Palms, Livelihoods, and Ecosystems: The proposed three-year program is an ambitious, international, and multi-institutional program (Consortium for Red Palm Weevil Control (C4RPWC) Program) designed to combat the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), a devastating pest that threatens palm cultivation globally. Led by ICARDA, the program aims to develop, test, adapt, and pilot innovative, sustainable science-based and environmentally friendly solutions to manage and contain RPW infestations. With the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a focal point, the program will develop and establish scalable strategies that can extend to other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) affected by this invasive pest. This initiative represents a turning point in global pest management efforts, ensuring that the cutting-edge science translates into tangible impact on farmer’s livelihoods and environmental conservation.

Forgotten fisheries: sustaining the contribution of marine molluscs to food security, sustainable livelihoods and environmental health in the Pacific (FORGOTTEN FISHERIES)

Start date
25 Jul 2025
End date
31 Dec 2028
Shells play an central role in the lives of people in the Pacific. People eat a large variety of shells. Shells are a source of income, and form an important part of people’s culture and identity. But governments tend to overlook the importance of shells: in fisheries policy, development projects and nature conservation these fisheries are often forgotten. In this project Dr. Jan van der Ploeg of the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Science will support the on-going research program of WorldFish in the Solomon Islands to demonstrate the importance of shells for food, income and the environment.
