Application of Focused Identification of Germplasm Strategy (FIGS) in Australian Environment

Start date
01 Jan 2014
End date
30 Jun 2019
New environmental and pests difficulties are forcing plant breeders to check for new genes especially in old landraces. GRDC has developed a technology that uses germplasm collection site to predict for adaptive traits. This approach has led to the discovery of previously undiscovered genes and useful variations of known genes.

Mining the ICARDA Barley Germplasm Collection for Biotic and Abiotic Priority Traits

Start date
01 Jan 2014
End date
31 Dec 2018
Barley is the second most important small grain crop in Australia with an annual production of 6.5 Mt. However uncertain future barley yields will be severely challenged by biotic and abiotic stresses. Development of new varieties relies upon the discovery and access to new sources of variation for desirable traits. The proposed project is designed to mine the wealth of genetic resources residing in the ICARDA genebank screening approximately 6,000 germplasm accessions.

Focused Improvement of ICARDA/Australian Durum Germplasm for Abiotic Tolerance

Start date
01 Jan 2014
End date
30 Oct 2019
World demand for durum wheat is predicted to grow so Australian and ICARDA breeders want to delivery good varieties for farmers. CWANA wild or selected germplasm are extremely rich in sources of resistances and the region shares a lot of similar agro-climatology conditions with Australia. On this collaboration, the project aims to develop a germplasm that can solve problems affecting both the partners

Reducing land degradation and farmers’ vulnerability to climate change in the highland dry areas of north-western Ethiopia

Start date
26 Apr 2013
End date
30 Jun 2016
Framed within an integrated watershed management approach, the project 'Reducing land degradation and farmers’ vulnerability to climate change in the highland dry areas of north-western Ethiopia' aims to develop, adapt, evaluate and demonstrate innovative, integrated, and sustainable land, water, crop and livestock management technologies. The project, funded by the Austrian Development Agency, will improve farmers’ resilience capacity to the impacts of climate variability and land degradation.

Improving rural livelihoods through innovative scaling up of science led participatory research development in Karnataka

Start date
01 Apr 2013
End date
31 Mar 2017
In GoK-CGIAR Bhoochetana plus program, the main objective is to scale up the systems approach for improving rural livelihoods by adopting the principle of convergence, consortium, capacity building, and collective action. At each benchmark location, the area to be covered during the first year is 10,000 ha, the second year 20,000 ha, the third year 40,000 ha, and the fourth year 80,000 ha for scaling-up of science-led interventions in the areas of rainfed agriculture, irrigated agriculture, vegetable systems, crop-livestock systems and rural livelihoods for ensuring food security, prosperity and profits for the farmers.

Pakistan Agricultural Innovation Program (AIP)

Start date
08 Mar 2013
End date
28 Feb 2017
In Pakistan, the fodder crops grown cover between 4 to 6 percent of the total cropped area which clearly indicates the limited uptake of these important crops and forages as part of a livestock feed regime. Consequently, animals barely meet their maintenance requirements. In order to improve livestock productivity it is critical to provide additional fodder to compensate for low quality roughages. Improved varieties of fodder were provided to poor farmers to improve their livelihoods.
